Sicily oranges

According to Italian agricultural association Coldiretti, storms which struck Italy's Tyrrhenian coast last week have caused 'severe damage' to fruit production in a number of areas as well as flooding fields and blocking smaller country roads.

As reported in a number of Italian newspapers, damage to production is currently being assessed across a number of parts of the country.

The worst damage is thought to have occurred in the western half of Sicily, from Agrigento in the south-west to Palermo in the north-west.

The island is a key citrus-producing area and producers are due to enter their peak harvesting period around the start of next year.

The situation is also described as 'critical' further north, particularly in Tuscany and Campania, with damage also reported in Liguria, Sardinia and Friuli.
