The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a new commissioner this week after the US Senate confirmed that Dr Margaret Hamburg would be taking on the role, succeeding Dr Andrew von Eschenbach.

Dr Hamburg, who was nominated by President Barack Obama in March this year, will become the 21st FDA commissioner after her position was confirmed through a unanimous voice vote, according to the Associated Press.

Reports in the US citing Dr Hamburg have said that she considers her top priorities to be improving food safety measures in the country and developing an effective swine flu vaccine to stem the outbreak.

Dr Hamburg, who served as the New York City health commissioner and was an assistant health secretary in the Clinton administration, is to be sworn in this week.
