A new study by industry analyst Plimsoll Publishing has identified a group of 209 emerging companies in the UK Fresh Produce industry that have, in the last year, increased sales by an average 14 per cent and are set to take further control of the market in 2012.

The Plimsoll Analysis showed that, over the last two years, growth in the UK fresh produce market has been sporadic, averaging 4 per cent two years ago and 2 per cent last year. However, these high growth companies have managed to grow much faster.

Of the 1,000 companies analysed in the Plimsoll Analysis, 180 were found to be suffering the consequences of these 209 high growth companies. They saw their own sales fall, on average by 10 per cent through the same period.

'This is absolute evidence that whatever growth there is in the market is being captured by a select group of companies,' said David Pattison, author of the new study.

'It’s clear that the market is changing,' he added. 'The revenue and growth streams companies took for granted a couple of years ago have changed. Frankly, it’s the one question that we all want to know the answer to, 'Where is the market heading?'. These 209 winning companies seem to have the best idea.'

Despite concerns to the contrary, this is not simply a case of larger companies forcing out their smaller competitors, according to Plimsoll, with growth still being achieved by a number of smaller, innovative companies, as well as the major players.
