Sarkozy

French president Nicolas Sarkozy yesterday revealed that he will fight against the end of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in Europe, as he promised his unflinching support for France's farmers.

'I am ready to head into a crisis in Europe sooner than accept that the Common Agricultural Policy be dismantled,' he said.

Mr Sarkozy stated that doing away the EU's farm policy would allow speculation to determine agricultural prices and 'prevent farmers from living decently from the fruits of their work'.

'I will not let our farms die when the issue of self-sufficiency and food security is becoming so crucial,' he said.

Talks on renewing CAP for the period after 2013 commence this year between the 27 EU countries, with supporters of strong regulation like France being pitted against the likes of the UK, which favours a market-oriented approach.
