Thermo Fischer has revealed that its new Salmonella detection kit has gained approval from international accreditation body the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC), a method which it says can deliver accurate results in fewer than 48 hours.

The Salmonella Rapid Culture Method takes two of the company's culture products and uses them in a two-step procedure, by first focusing on enrichment through Thermo Fischer Scientific's One-Broth Salmonella and then isolation involving chromogens in the group's Brilliance Salmonella product, foodproductiondaily.com reported.

Salmonella species can then be identified and differentiated as purple colonies, according to the group, which recently saw the test recognised with AOAC Performance Testing Methods status.

'With this method, producers can deliver goods safely to market sooner then with conventional microbiological techniques,' said Tom Floyd, president of microbiology products at Thermo Fischer Scientific. 'Solutions that detect pathogens should not disrupt the production process, and that is why we are committed to delivering technology and methods that are both accurate and rapid.

'The recent Salmonella crisis (in the US) underscores the fact that food producers can never be too vigilant,' he added.
