UK supermarket giant Sainsbury's has announced a 2.9 per cent increase in like-for-like sales excluding fuel for the second quarter.

Total sales excluding fuel rose by 5.2 per cent, according to the company, compared to a 4.4 per cent lift in the last quarter.

However, much of the growth appears to have come in the non-food business, which Sainsbury's said was growing at three times the rate of its food business.

The retailer also warned that higher fuel prices were putting pressure on hard-pressed consumers.

Chief executive Justin King commented: 'We are pleased with our progress in the first half of the financial year. We expect the consumer environment to remain challenging and will continue to work hard to deliver universal appeal through providing great value, great quality products to our customers.'
