Sainsbury’s has launched English-grown kiwiberries in its stores, with the bitesize fruit exclusive and a first for any retailer in the UK.

Now grown in Hertfordshire, extensive trials have beencarried out to grow the kiwiberry in Britain, with the fruit traditionallyfound in Italy and Holland and as far afield as South America andNew Zealand.

No larger than a grape, kiwiberries are a sweeteralternative to kiwifruit while being more convenient to eat.

'We're always looking at new ways to grow more fruiton home soil which is a good thing for British farmers as well asour customers,' said Finbar Cartlidge, tropical fruit buyer at Sainsbury's. 'We anticipate this local launch of Britishkiwiberries to come as a great addition of fresh quality produceavailable in store.

'We'd encourage customers to take advantage of this exclusiveoffer while they're available as stocks are limited,' Cartlidge added. 'We hopeto work closely with the grower to produce a larger crop in thefuture.'

British kiwiberries are now available in ten select stores in Hereford and the south west of England, with the 125g packs priced at £2.75 (€3.47).
