It has been a strong domestic topfruit season for Sainsbury's in the UK, with the retailer announcing that it has sold over 38,000 tonnes of British apples so far this season, equating to over 300m individual pieces of fruit.

Sales have been high despite unpredictable weather seen across the UK, including both the warmest March and the wettest April on record, and Sainsbury's expects to sell a further 11m apples as braeburn and bramley continue to represent the home-grown season.

'It's great to see that customers are enjoying our British apples and eating more than ever before,' said Dr Teresa Huxley, Sainsbury's apple and pear expert. 'Customersdemand for British grown fruit is really giving our growers theconfidence to plant more and our buyers the confidence to buymore.

'Working with our growers and by establishing a concept orchard todevelop new varieties, we're able to extend the British season andprovide more home-grown apples up and down the UK and make a greatstep towards our 2020 commitment to double British food sales,' she added. 'As the British apple and pear season draws to an end, planningand preparation for the next season is already underway in ourorchard. We would encourage customers to look out for abumper summer of British grown products this year from asparagus,blueberries, curly lettuce , tomatoes and lettuce through tostrawberries and melons.'

Sainsbury's stocks over 52 varieties of home-grown apples and 10 different per varieties at its stores.
