US grocer Safeway has announced that it has promoted Robert Edwards to the position of president of the company.
Edwards previously served as executive vice-president and chief financial officer and will now be responsible for Safeway’s retail operations, marketing, merchandising, corporate brands, manufacturing, distribution and finance, Planet Retail reported.
Safeway said that Edwards would continue as chief financial officer until a successor is found, with chairman and CEO Steve Burd noting: '`Edwards'` assumption of these new duties provides me an opportunity to concentrate more of my time on innovation and a range of strategic initiatives that will drive core and non-core business growth in the long term.'
