Richard Brasher, the former head of Tesco's UK operations, has been appointed as the new chief executive officer of South African retailer Pick n Pay, a role he will take up on 1 February 2013.
Brasher, who has been appointed following an 'extensive international search', held roles as CEO of Tesco UK and commercial director during his spell at one of the world's largest grocery retailers, and was responsible for Tesco's international sourcing operation.
Pick n Pay chairman Gareth Ackerman said that South African group was 'extremely fortunate' to have secured Brasher as its CEO, and noted that his experience would stand him in good stead to manage all major areas of Pick n Pay's business.
'Richard has a singularly impressive track record,' said Ackerman. 'We are delighted he has agreed to join us as Pick n Pay's new CEO. The executive search was exhaustive, and given his background, experience, expertise and array of innovative achievements, he was the natural choice.'
In a statement, Brasher, 51, expressed his delight at taking up the new role.
'Pick n Pay is a dynamic, innovative business with a proud and impressive history,' he explained. 'I'm both excited and honoured to be joining the company at an important time in its development and believe there is a lot I can offer with my experience in the retail market.'
