Rewe, Germany's second-largest retailer, has revealed that it has increased its domestic store portfolio by purchasing supermarkets from cooperative retailer Coop eG.
The acquisition, which was made for an undisclosed fee, sees the group take over 39 outlets in the south-west region of Germany, according to Reuters.
Rewe said that the purchase had been a 'rare opportunity' to grow in the German market, with the deal still subject to antitrust authority approval.
The group said that it would continue to look for suitable acquisitions to expand its store network in Germany, while other retailers, such as fellow German group Metro, continue to look at markets in Asia, eastern Europe or the Americas for growth.
