Supervalu

Supervalu and Remke Markets have announced in a joint statement the transferring of ownership of six Greater Cincinnati bigg's stores, with the transaction expected to close in spring 2010.

The deal will bring Remke's complement of locally owned and operated stores to 13, the group said, with each of the locations being supplied by Supervalu's distribution centre in Xenia, Ohio.

'We are absolutely thrilled to welcome these bigg's stores and their customers into the Remke family, said group president and CEO Bill Remke. 'The bigg's stores bring many assets to our organisation, and we look forward to blending the strengths of two great grocery chains to create an organisation committed to service, quality and value.'

Supervalu plans to close its five remaining bigg's stores, before the end of May, but is anticipating a good partnership with Remke on the six stores that it has sold.

'We look forward to working with the Remke organisation through our supply relationship as they strengthen their overall presence in the marketplace,' said Janel Haugarth, Supervalu executive vice-president and president/COO of the company's Supply Chain Services operation.
