French fruit breeder Agro Selections Fruit has announced that it is working with apple companies Blue Whale and Apofruit to develop Regal’In apples in France and Italy.
Last year, Regal’In signed an exclusive deal with French exporter Blue Whale for the development of its Regalyou apple in France. This year, Italian group Apofruit has signed an exclusive agreement for the variety’s development in Italy.
According to the agreements, Blue Whale and Apofruit will plant 100ha in the short term, with the first retail trials due this year. Consumer tests have already characterised the apple as a variety with an exceptional, juicy taste and a crunchy bite.
Naturally resistant to scab, the variety is harvested at the end of September for sale until the end of June. It also benefits from an attractive round shape and a skin that is relatively resistant to defects.
Other agreements are reportedly being negotiated, both in the northern and southern hemispheres.
