Dutch tomato specialist RedStar has denied a report in the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad that said it plans to house 160 migrant workers at its premises in Voorne-Putten, near Maasdijk to the west of Rotterdam.
The report, which was published on Friday, said local residents were opposed to the purported plan.
The newspaper also suggested that workers from Romania and Bulgaria would be able to save time and money by not travelling to and from Rotterdam, where they live.
In a statement, RedStar's chief executive Henri Lambriex said the company was not involved in the plan for a residential park.
'The AD has been misled by Patrick van der Kaaij, son of one of the founders of RedStar,' he explained. 'Patrick is not employed by our company. So he is certainly not speaking on behalf of RedStar's management.'
According to Lambriex, RedStar works through a separate entity to source its labour.
'The plan for a residential park is in [van der Kaaij's] personal capacity. We are completely outside of that,' he said.
'We provide staggered accommodation for our employees in collaboration with our employment agency. Integration into Dutch society is important to us for the well-being of our employees and the culture of our company.'
