The United Fresh Produce Association has announced the appointment of the experienced Ray Gilmer as its new vice-president of communications, where he will be responsible for outreach to key news media.

Mr Gilmer boats more than 20 years experience of agricultural issues management, public relations and crisis management, having been at the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association since 1994 and having also served on the board and executive committee of the Produce for Better Health Foundation.

He has also served as group manager of communications for BASF crop protection in the US, in addition to roles in broadcast journalism and public relations.

'Ray is well known to many throughout the produce industry, due to more than a decade heading up communications and public affairs at the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association,' said United Fresh president and CEO Tom Stenzel. 'We are indeed fortunate to add him to our team.'

And Jim Lemke, chairman elect of the trade association, said that Mr Gilmer's addition would be of great benefit to members. 'Ray probably has some of the strongest communications credentials in the produce industry and I look forward to working with him to further boost United's recognition as the leading voice for the produce industry.'
