US importer-distributor Progreso Produce has announced the addition of Peruvian avocados to its product portfolio.
The Texas-based firm said it has been importing Mexican avocadoes for over a year and already offers a year-round Mexican avocado programme.
The addition of Peruvian avocados fills a short 12-week market window and complements Progreso’s Mexican supply, the company said in a news statement.
“The opportunity to make Peruvian avocados available to our customers allows us to offer a firmer fruit during the time of year when the Mexican avocado crop is very ripe,” commented Curtis DeBerry, president of Progreso Produce.
“For some customers, ripe fruit poses receiving challenges.Peruvian fruit gives our customers a choice during this quality sensitive time.”
Progreso will begin receiving Peruvian avocados through the Port of Houston during the week of 25 June.
The fruit will be available in 48 count sizes and larger, and marketed under the Southern Exposure brand.
In addition to Peruvian avocados, Progreso said its Mexican avocados will be available, adding that ripening programmes can be set up to customer specifications.
Progreso also offers a year-round, onion and watermelon sourcing deal from all major growing regions throughout the US and Mexico.
Additionally, the group said it is rapidly expanding its strawberry, blueberry and blackberry business with nearly year-round availability of blueberries and blackberries.
Progreso continues to grow its mango business too.
