US retail

The latest edition of the FreshFacts on Retail report, which is produced by United Fresh Produce Association, has revealed that retail prices for both fruits and vegetables grew in the second quarter (Q2) of the year, subsequently leading to an increase in weekly dollar sales on the same period of 2010.

The report, which is put together in partnership with the Perishables Group and sponsored by Del Monte Fresh Produce, showed higher retail prices leading to a decline in produce sales volume, down 1 per cent on Q2 last year.

However, there was volume sales growth in value-added fruits, value-added vegetables and organics, figures United Fresh said demonstrated that consumers were willing to pay a premium for their fresh produce preferences.

Weekly sales of organic fruits grew 12.5 per cent, while value-added fruit climbed 3 per cent in dollar terms, with a similar move in value-added vegetables (up 5.6 per cent).

Other highlights of the quarterly report included bananas, melons, avocados and specialty fruit enjoying the most substantial dollar growth of the top 10 fruit categories, while eight of the top 10 vegetable categories posted sales that exceeded the second quarter of 2010.
