JoHerbert, Marketing Manager at Herbert Engineering said electronic sorting, improvements in grading and increased environmental awareness were among the factors driving a pick-up in produce engineering.

'In the last three months, we have seen a growth in manufacturing,' she said. 'The market is still steady but it will only be getting stronger.'

'Electronic sorting is proving very popular because in terms of quality you can get the perfect product which everyone wants toachieve. In the last 12 months there have been a lots of environmental improvements, with people looking at greener options such as water treatment.'

Paul O’Donnell, head of external affairs at the Manufacturing Technologies Association, said: 'Exports have been a key driver and there has been an increased recognition that British manufacturing is a highly competitive and good quality offer.

'Thejob market began to get better in the summer and has been pretty consistent since then. Employees who dropped down to part time are back on full time and the market is looking stronger.'

The Engineering Employers Federation predicted the manufacturing sector would outperform the rest of the economy next year.
