Spanish melon producer Procomel is to triple production of its Sugar Baby Gold variety this season, thanks to what the company has described as “strong demand” for the product.
In spite of the difficult weather conditions coinciding with the start of the campaign, the Murcia-based company said that it the “excellent reception” Sugar Baby Gold received last season meant that now was an opportune moment to increase production of the variety.
In a statement, Procomel’s managing director, Celedonio Buendia, said there was a big consumer demand for the melon, which it was aiming to try to meet.
Mr Buendia said that Procomel was hopeful of repeating the success that it had experienced with the variety during the winter months, when it draws its production from a company-owned site in Senegal, during which it marketed “exceptional” quality fruit.
