Having enlarged its range of cabbage with the introduction of Brussels sprouts back in 2011, Brittany-based marketer Prince de Bretagne is currently developing its kale offering, according to Fld.
Although the vegetable is almost unknown in France, it is very popular in northern Germany and the Netherlands and, due to its richness in vitamin C, magnesium, iron and beta-carotene, is currently in vogue among those following 'detox' diets.
'We have been producing kale for three years for the convenience range,' says Prince de Bretagne's Eleonore Faucher. 'We will now be offering it also for the fresh market to complete and diversify our range.
The product, to be produced initially on an area of 6ha by a producer from cooperative union UCPT, will be available from November to February or March, both in France and abroad.
According to Faucher, Prince de Bretagne aims to develop the market for kale in all its export destinations.
