Almerian salad and vegetables producer Primaflor is developing its own production base in the UK as part of an international expansion strategy aimed at bringing its production closer to its customers.
The company says exports now account for 45 per cent of its €150m annual sales, and this is rising every year.
In 2015 Primaflor UK was set up with an initial investment in 70ha of lettuce production in Bedford to enable it to supply its customers year-round. Director Cecilio Peregrín said this will increase gradually in line with market demand.
The company supplies Sainsbury’s and Asda, as well as other leading European supermarkets including Lidl, Ica and Coop Switzerland.
“The fact that these supermarkets use our products for their private label offering shows the level of trust they have in placing their brand image in our hands,” Peregrín said.
Primaflor markets more than 100 product lines including a wide range of fresh-cut and convenience products. It has more than 6,400ha of production, mainly in Almería, making it one of the provinces leading salad suppliers.
