Italian re-usable and recyclable packing provider CPR System has declared its recently launched Progetto Pallet Verde (Green Pallet Project) a success, helping to reduce operating costs for fresh produce companies by improving efficiency and raising levels of standardisation.

The project, unveiled just over a year ago, aims to provide clients with an efficient, low-cost system of distribution, and one which at the same time has a minimal impact on the environment.

'The project's competitiveness has grown and flourished thanks to our supply chain management system, which we developed for the movement of crates,' explains Gianni Bonora, managing director of CPR Servizi.

'Our members can in fact take advantage of a pallet rental equal to €1.50 per movement, in contrast with roughly €4.00 for disposable pallets and €3.50-€3.00 for other rental systems,' he added.

According to CPR, the success of its Europallet system underlines the potential impact for Italian fresh produce companies' competitiveness of rationalising their logistics by adopting a cooperative supply chain management model.

'I believe this system, thanks to its versatility and rationality, can offer huge advantages not only to the fresh produce supply chain but also to other agricultural supply chains,' added Mr Bonora. 'We are already testing the pallets in other areas and I believe that soon we will be able to expand their use.'
