Spain’s garlic sector has hailed a “very positive” result for its 2010 campaign, both in terms of pricing and quality, with the expected outcome for this year’s campaign expected to be even stronger.
At its annual general assembly, Spanish garlic producers’ association ANPCA said that there had been a “significant increase” in exports (7 per cent) compared with 2009, while garlic imports to Spain had also fallen by 9 per cent year-on-year.
Despite a 4 per cent drop in consumption in Spain, which the association blamed on the effects of the recession on spending, ANPCA said the 2010 campaign had been “very positive in terms of the level of prices achieved and product quality”.
Looking ahead to the 2011 season, the producers’ group said that ANPCA’s members would have more than 7,800ha under production, a 20 per cent increase compared with the season before.
