Spanish plant breeder Planasa is looking forward to a successful berry season in the Americas thanks to its ongoing development of new varieties to suit local growing conditions and export market windows.

The company, which operates subsidiaries in Chile, Mexico and California, is anticipating another bumper sales year as it continues to roll out and trial varieties of strawberries and raspberries.

“We’re going to continue growing and investing in the Americas,” Planasa’s manager Alexandre Pierron-Darbonne told Americafruit.

In Mexico, the company is developing two raspberry varieties called Adelita and Lupita as well as testing other advanced raspberry and strawberry selections.

In Chile, meanwhile, the focus is on boosting strawberry plant production in response to growing demand in the South American country.

The Planasa group is also about to start its first season in California, where Pierron-Darbonne believes the firm will sell 25m plants following a US$10m investment over the last three years.
