Peru is on course to export 78.7m cartons (8.2kg) of table grapes in 2024/25 according to the first forecast issued by industry body Provid. This represents an increase of 25.4 per cent on 2023/24, during which 62.7m cartons were shipped.

Provid said the increase is due to the recovery in production in the north of the country, which was impacted by El Niño last season.

“The table grape industry has a strong capacity to overcome adversities and adapt to new challenges, consolidating itself as a mature industry that seeks to maintain its competitiveness and positioning in the global market,” the association said.

Provid added that this resilience is also reflected in the sector’s ability to adapt to changing consumer preferences, especially through the incorporation of new varieties that have also increased yields per hectare.

Peruvian grapes will be shipped to more than 50 markets in 2024/25, including the US, Europe, Latin America and China.

Ica leads the way in terms of planted area, accounting for 49 per cent of planted area. It is followed by Piura (37 per cent), Lambayeque (6 per cent), La Libertad (5 per cent), Arequipa (3 per cent), Ancash and Lima (0.5 per cent each) and Moqueagua (0.1 per cent).

Provid is scheduled to release its next estimates in October and December, when the campaign is already underway.
