As 2021/22 campaign draws to a close, shipments are on course to top US$1.3bn
Peru consolidated its position as the world’s leading exporter of fresh blueberries in 2021/22, posting an increase of around 30 per cent in shipments, according to Fresh Fruit Peru.
Shipments to the first week of May totalled 219,706 tonnes worth US$1.310bn, an increase of 32 per cent in volume and 28 per cent in value compared with 2020/21.
The fruit fetched an average price of US$5.96 per kg, 3 per cent less than in the previous year.
Peru now accounts for one-quarter of all the blueberries exported globally, their value being twice that of second-ranked supplier Chile, which exported US$564m of blueberries this season.
Peruvian blueberries are shipped to 36 markets worldwide, with the top three markets – the US, Europe and China, taking 55 per cent, 23 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.
Fresh Fruit Peru said China was Peru’s fastest growing market last year.
