Peru will be the host nation for the VIII World Avocado Congress, which takes place in Lima on 13-18 September 2015, the Peruvian Hass Avocado Growers’ Association (ProHass) has informed.
ProHass president James Bosworth said the country’s strong economic growth and increasingly important role as a supplier to global markets were the main reasons it had been chosen to host the event.
“Our prominent agro-export activity, the quality of Peruvian avocados, production volume and the country’s geographical and climate conditions have been a deciding factor in its selection as host nation of such an important event,” Bosworth noted.
“Thanks to the effort made by agro-export companies and their collaborators over the past 15 years, Peru has become the second largest exporter in the world, with 165,000 tonnes shipped in the last year.”
The main destinations of avocado shipments are Europe and the US, which together account for 90 per cent of exports, Bosworth said.
The congress will address topics related to genetic resources, nursery management, pests and diseases, culture management and techniques, post harvest, processing, human health and nutrition, marketing, and trade.
