IAS2009

Peru is to host the 12th International Asparagus Symposium (IAS) for the first time in 2009 to bring together the industry to discuss recent research and exchange experiences about developments in breeding and biotechnology, pests and diseases, cultivation, physiology and marketing.

The event, last held in the Netherlands during 2005, will take place in the Peruvian capital Lima on 29 October - 1 November 2009, according to the Peruvian Asparagus and Vegetables Institute (IPEH).

“The symposium will bring together scientists, researchers and technical personnel from across the world to share advances in worldwide crop research, evaluate the current asparagus trade and prioritise research for the years to come,” Beatriz Tubino of IPEH told Fruitnet.com.

“We anticipate around 200-300 delegates to attend IAS in 2009, of which around 50 per cent will travel from overseas,” Ms Tubino added.

A range of social and tourism events are also planned to take place before and after the symposium.

Peru is the world’s leading fresh asparagus producer and exporter with around 27,000ha currently under production across the South American nation.
