Peruvian avocado suppliers are planning to increase their production of the Hass variety in a bid to take advantage of opportunities in the recently opened US market, according to a report by the Peruvian Exporters’ Association (Adex).
Camposol, the leading avocado export company in 2008, will increase planted area from 1,200ha to 2,100ha by the end of this year, revealed general manager Juan José Gal’lino.
In January alone Peruvian avocado exports rose by 103 per cent compared with the same period last year, worth some US$1.3m, according to Adex data.
The Netherlands was the main destination for Peruvian avocados, absorbing 72 per cent of the volume, worth some US$940,000 – an increase of 308 per cent against the same month last year when exports amounted to US$230,000.
