Peruvian asparagus exports reached US$321m between January and October of this year, a rise of 22.1 per cent on the same period of 2012, according to Comex. Shipments have gone up by 80.5 per cent since 2008, representing an average annual increase of 12.5 per cent.
Production covers an estimated 27,000ha and output reached 385,654 tonnes in 2012. Of this, 121,181 tonnes were exported, the US taking the biggest share (64 per cent), followed by the Netherlands (11 per cent), and the UK and Spain (7 per cent each). Exporter association Adex said the industry continues to make inroads into new markets, including several countries in eastern Europe and the Middle East.
