Over 400 firms exhibited at the Peru show

Expoalimentaria 2010, Peru’s new annual agri-export trade show, was a resounding success, event organiser and national exporters association Adex announced this week.

Over US$69m worth of export deals were clinched at the late September show – now in its second year – exceeding expectations, Adex said.

Some 402 companies from the agriculture and fishery sectors of Peru (305) and abroad (97) exhibited at the three-day event in Lima, which attracted international buyers from 29 different countries, including the US, Mexico, Japan, India, the Netherlands and South Africa.

Big retail names like Carrefour, Wal-Mart, Woolworth and Almacenes Exito sent representatives to the show, which launched in 2009.

“ Expoalimentaria 2010 became the meeting point for buyers of food from around the world who were attracted by the variety and quality of agricultural and fishery products offered by big, medium, and small companies and even by organised communities from all regions of the country,” Adex’s Rosa Chavez told Fruitnet.com.

“52 per cent of participants came from the agribusiness sector, while 4 per cent came from the fishery sector. The service sector companies were also present with 26 per cent, machinery and equipment with 13 per cent and packaging with 5 per cent,” she added.

Overseas Expoalimentaria exhibitors came from countries including Ecuador, the US, Argentina, Brazil and Germany. And 126 of the firms showcasing their wares this year were doing so for the second time, Adex said.

Running along side the trade show, which was organised with support from Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Promperú, and the sponsorship of Scotiabank, were a programme of seminars covering organics and the fresh and processed fruit and vegetable sector.
