Since launching its ‘Peel Off’ streamlining programme at the Port of Los Angeles in February, port management says the new operational model is working to clear its backlog of containers.

“We have found an efficient way to get containers to their destination that is beginning to pay off,” said Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, in a company statement. “We’re acting on our pledge to our customers to harmonise the supply chain and make it work better. Permanently.”

The ‘Peel Off’ strategy refers to the progamme created by logistics company The Pasha Group and trucking firm Total Transportation Services alongside retailers and terminal operators, which “peels off” containers from high-volume customers to a nearby dock yard, where cargo owners can transport containers in less than 48 hours.

The 'Peel Off' yard is open six days a week at the moment, but 24/7 operations are expected as demand builds, with the programme possibly spreading to other ports in the future. The “integrated strategy” is expected to not only clear the backlog of containers at the port as a result of labour disputes and disruptions earlier in the year, but also improve port operations in the future.

“While the programme is geared for high-volume shippers, all customers benefit,” Seroka said. “Increasing terminal productivity has a positive ripple effect for everyone moving cargo through our Port.”
