Paul Foley Aldi

Discount retailer Aldi has made the surprise announcement that Paul Foley, the managing director of its UK and Ireland branch, has left the group to pursue new business interests.

According to press reports, Germany-based Aldi had revealed that Mr Foley departed by mutual consent after 20 years with the group.

Mr Foley will be replaced in his role by Armin Burger.

A recent report by TNS Worldpanel had pegged Aldi's sales growth at 8.3 per cent in the UK for the three months to 12 July 2009, down from growth of 17 per cent in the corresponding period of 2008.

When the report was released, Mr Foley told the Guardian: 'We have slowed down in the last 12-14 weeks, but we were up againstmeteoric growth from last year. They were enormous numbers. It is not areverse; it is just not growing at the same pace.'
