A 26-tonne consignment has been sent to the Argentine market
Paraguay has carried out its first exports of Persian lime. A consignment of 26 tonnes was from the department of Concepción sent to Argentina, the result of more than a decade of work by the Agriculture Ministry.
“The limes were harvested from a certified surface of 130ha, with another 20ha in the process of being developed,” agriculture minister Carlos Giménez told InfoNegocios.
“The goal is to maintain production volume and quality to continue supplying both the local and international markets. Paraguay has unique climatic conditions that favour the quality of our limes, especially in areas close to the tropics, such as Concepción.”
The trial shipment passed the phytosanitary and quality requirements of the Argentine market, demonstrating the potential of Paraguayan products to compete in international markets, the minister said.
At the end of 2024, the government also embarked on talks to secure access to the Brazilian market.
“The homologation of phytosanitary requirements in Mercosur is a complex process, but we are making progress. In the case of limes, we have implemented treatments such as washing, disinfection and waxing to comply with international standards. Brazil is a large and accessible market that we hope to conquer soon,” Giménez said.
Paraguay is working had to diversify its agricultural portfolio. It hopes to carry out its first cabbage exports next year and a range of other products are on the horizon.
“We are sure that this is the beginning of an era of successful exports for Paraguay. The commitment of producers and the support of the government will allow us to continue growing and diversifying our exportable offer,” Giménez said.
