OTC-Holland has announced that it has received the first containers of organic Hass avocados from its Peruvian partners La Grama and Fundo Los Paltos, marking the start of the new Peruvian avocado season.
The campaign runs until August, when OTC's supply switches to Chile, before finally sourcing from Mexico from September through until November.
“It’s expected to be a normal season, although volumes are estimated to be larger compared to last year’s avocado season,' noted Alexander Restrepo, the buyer for Central and Latin America at OTC-Holland. 'Due to climate conditions in Peru, the harvesting period has been delayed for two to three weeks and small sizes are present at large amounts, which suit various pack sizes.”
OTC-Holland has been working with La Grama and Fundo Los Paltos for five years. In April, Restrepo travelled through Latin America and visited these partners, along with their organic avocado growers.
“Our organic Hass avocados are grown by farmers in the Andes Highlands, 500km northeast of Lima,' Restrepo added. 'It’s in this region where the organic avocados can benefit from the long lasting intense sunshine combined with the cool nights and dry weather. Under these conditions the organic avocados are naturally grown, rich in oil, excellent in taste and of high quality.”
