PGI-certified, red-fleshed oranges from the Italian island region of Sicily have gone on sale in Spain for the first time.
The fruit is being supplied by leading Sicilian export marketer Oranfrizer in partnership with leading Spanish importer Eurobanan, which have this week been promoting the fruit via a shared stand at the Salòn de Gourmets food and drink fair in the Spanish capital Madrid.
Nello Alba, director of Oranfrizer, said the Spanish market presented an important commercial opportunity for the company's fresh oranges as well as its line of not-from-concentrate juices.
He also underlined the fact that Oranfrizer was breaking new ground for Italian citrus exports to Spain.
'It's a challenge which in the past no-one has wanted to take on,' he commented. 'The global citrus market is like a golden ocean, but we are a drop of red which deserves to be better appreciated.'
