A long-awaited return to full production means Italy’s pear specialists have a chance to export until May this season
Opera La Pera, Italy’s only specialist pear grower association, says it expects its commercial sales to continue until the start of May, as it prepares to exhibit once again at this year’s Fruit Logistica trade show.
The forecast represents a return to something like normality compared with this time last season, when an smaller crop meant a much earlier finish to the campaign and no fruit left to sell.
“The scenario is different from last year, when, in conjunction with the Berlin fair, we practically had no more product,” says the consortium’s president Adriano Aldrovandi.
“In 2025, finally, all the conditions are in place to supply the market for the next three months. This is a return to more normal conditions, which enhance the quality of the fruit grown by our members, guaranteeing our customers continuity in the availability of fresh and tasty fruit.”
Opera’s meetings in Berlin will therefore be a chance to reconfirm its commitment to the German market, a strategically important one for the group’s member growers and exporters.
“In recent years, the production deficit has not allowed us to achieve the significant positioning we once had and, especially in Germany, we have felt the pressure from other European areas,” comments director Manuel Manfredi. “But we are determined to defend our share on the German market and working to regain space on the shelves of our German partners, with a focus on the quality that distinguishes us and on the solidity of our supply chain values.”
He adds: “The quality of the fruit helps us: the favourable weather conditions seen before harvest have contributed to the production of particularly tasty pears, with optimal organoleptic quality.”
