Online grocery retailing in the UK is expected to double by 2015, a new report from international food and grocery expert IGD has suggested, with sales set to jump to £9.5bn (€11.2bn) in 2015 from the current level of £4.8bn (€5.6bn).

According to the research, online shopping will represent 5.2 per cent of the overall UK grocery market by 2015, compared with the current 3.2 per cent.

'Online grocery retailing is already growing at a phenomenal rate and there is still plenty of potential for significant expansion,' said Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive of IGD. 'Although online has a small share of the overall grocery market, it will be the fastest growing channel.'

Ms Denney-Finch noted that IGD's research had found 7 per cent of shoppers buying all of their regular groceries online, with 13 per cent expected to use the internet to do more food and grocery shopping over the next 12 months.

'Retailers are driving online growth through new developments, such as 'click and collect', introducing smart phone apps and building stores specifically to cater for online orders,' she added. 'Wider delivery coverage and better home internet connections are some of the reasons why internet grocery retail has the potential to grow significantly.'
