Spain’s Castilla La Mancha onion producers’ association Procecam has signed a collaborative agreement with agricultural software company Isagri to provide production costs analysis and traceability systems to its members.
With production costs topping on average more than €0.10 per kg this season compared with prices averaging €0.07 per kg, Procecam said it was seeking new solutions for growers who were faced with prices that were “clearly insufficient to achieve a profit”.
“Due to the difficult situation that the onion sector is going through, with prices that are far below the cost of production, Castilla La Mancha’s onion producers have decided to focus on innovation to improve production processes and optimise resources as a solution to this scenario,” said the group in a statement.
To achieve this aim, Procecam said it has signed a deal with Isagri to make a number of its software systems, including energy optimisation, production cost analysis and traceability available to members.
