New data released by retail market analyst Neilsen has revealed a strong November performance by the UK grocery market in November, with sales for the four weeks to 27 November climbing 4.8 per cent year-on-year.

According to the group, sales growth for the period was driven by widespread promotions, which accounted for 39 per cent of all sales by value.

'Shopper spend is being promotionally pushed rather than consumer led, so it is of no surprise that year-on-year sales improved to around the plus 5 per cent mark in November, said Nielsen's senior manager of retailer services Mike Watkins.

Of the top four retailers in the country, Sainsbury's demonstrated the fastest growth, with sales up 6.8 per cent for the 12 weeks to 27 November. For the same period, Tesco saw sales growth of 4.1 per cent, Asda of 3.7 per cent and Morrisons of 1.9 per cent.
