Northwest cherries

Cherry sendings from the northwest region of the US are progressing well, with final volumes expected to match the pre-season estimate of 16.8m boxes.

BJ Thurlby, president of Northwest Cherry Growers, told the Tri-city Herald that the industry had shipped a record 400,000 boxes of cherries on Monday 1 August, a single-day record for the month, with shipments expected to continue throughout August.

The industry had already shipped over 14m boxes of fruit, with late-season packing – the result of cool spring weather and a late ripening crop – expected to help overseas exports, which have made up 32 per cent of sendings so far this campaign.

For the first time, late-picked cherries will be sent to Chinese-speaking countries, including China and Taiwan, for its Moon Festival, the Tri-city Herald.
