New Zealand kiwifruit

Barry O'Neill, the chief executive of Kiwifruit Vine Health in New Zealand, has dismissed figures that suggest the rate of Psa-V infection in the Te Puke area is slowing down.

New statistics showed that there has only been one new infected orchard in the Te Puke area and one new infection in the Tauranga area.

However, O'Neill told Sun Live that this reduction could be down to a number of different factors, with new infections still being uncovered in other areas, bringing the total across the country to 1,179 kiwifruit orchards.

'I don't think we can draw conclusions,' he told the publication. 'It might reflect on the situation of the weather, which has been favourable. It might reflect on the fact that everybody is busy with the harvest, and there may be less inspections being undertaken.'
