Figures show sharp rise in production and exports of Allison, Autumncrisp and Sweet Globe
Peru has shipped 81.6mn cartons of table grapes so far this season (to week 12), an increase of 26 per cent on the 64.9mn cartons exported in the year-earlier period, according to analysis from Sensonomic.
With harvesting for the 2024/25 Peruvian table grape season winding down, the data shows strong export growth for leading new varietals. Exports of Allison, Autumncrisp and Sweet Globe grew by more than 40 per cent compared to last season.
“Almost all the top ten producers were nearly break-even or had increases. Los Olivos de Villacuri, Agroindustrial Beta, and El Pedregal had increases of more than 40 per cent,” Sensonomic stated.
Reporting on the final stages of the campaign, it noted: “Table grape harvest appears to be mostly over in Peru. Exports from Ica fell to 0.25mn boxes (8.2kg) in Week 12. Some volumes are still left in liquidations, which may bump up the final numbers slightly. As of Week 12, total exports from Peru were 81.6mn boxes compared to 64.9mn boxes last season, an increase of 26 per cent”.
US and EU imports of Peruvian grapes are up over 30 per cent this season (from late May 2024 to the last few weeks). The extra volume Peru sent to the US approached total imports from Mexico and the extra sent to the EU exceeded total imports from Brazil.
Imports from South Africa are slightly higher than those from last season in the EU and much higher in the US. Similarly, imports from Chile to the US are also higher. “These numbers will increase as the final boxes arrive from South Africa and the harvest progresses in Chile,” Sensonomics said.
Imports from Brazil are down in both the US and EU. According to Sensonomics, lower prices abroad from the high volumes offered by Peru and Chile drove Brazilian exporters to focus on the domestic market where prices were better.
