DFDS has launched a new weekly ferry service between Egypt and Italy, an alternative to container shipping which it says will make it easier for Egyptian exporters to ship fresh fruit and vegetables to Europe.

The weekly connection, which links the Italian port of Trieste with Damietta in Egypt, will also provide a new option for Italian suppliers who want to reach the north African country.

It is the first time DFDS has included Egypt in its international network, and is also believed to be the first new freight connection between the two countries in around a decade.

“The new route aligns perfectly with our commitment to organic growth and solidifies our strong presence in the Mediterranean region,” commented Mathieu Girardin, head of DFDS’ ferry division. “The service not only expands our network but also enhances our ability to connect communities and support local economies opening up opportunities for trade and stronger economic ties between the two countries.”

The maiden voyage is due to start on 29 November, leaving the port of Damietta bound for Trieste with a sailing time of almost three days.

To set up the new connection, DFDS has entered into a strategic partnership with Egyptian shipping and logistics specialist Pan Marine Shipping Services.

Pan Marine is understood to have secured a dedicated terminal in Damietta for the new route, one equipped to handle the loading and unloading of all shipments.

Marwan El Shazly, vice-president of Pan Marine, commented: “As a comprehensive shipping and logistics service provider, Pan Marine continues to lead the way in offering maritime solutions tailored to the needs of both the local market and our global clients.

“The launch of this new freight ferry route marks a major milestone for Egypt’s trade relations with Europe. We are glad to collaborate with DFDS in providing innovative and efficient transportation solutions.”
