Livorno Reefer Terminal

A new port-side handling facility for perishable products has been officially opened in Livorno, central Italy.

Livorno Reefer Terminal, which is part of the Leaonardo da Vinci Terminal at the Tyrrhenian port, is set to provide a key entry point for fresh fruit and vegetables into the Italian market, according to the group behind the new development.

The terminal has been established thanks to a €25m investment backed by a consortium including Compagnia Portuale di Livorno, Spedizionieri Agroalimentari Riuniti (SAR) and fresh produce importer Baccini Ortofrutta.

'We are convinced that the terminal will succeed in attracting major volumes of traffic by utilising existing links with the main South American countries and the north-western part of Africa, which produce counter-seasonal food products,' said a spokesperson for the new terminal.

'Our goal, in time, is to handle a total of 400,000 tonnes cargo annually,' the spokesperson added.
