The Murcian Institute of Food and Agricultural Investigation (Imida) and commercial crop researcher Novamed have announced the development of three new peach varieties, after some two years of work.
Imida director Adrián Martínez told Spanish daily ABC that the new varieties comprised a red skinned peach with yellow flesh that could be harvested from the first week of May, a yellow peach with a similar production cycle, and a second yellow variety that comes into production in June.
Mr Martínez said the investigative programme was aiming to launch other varieties over the coming seasons that could extend the production campaign, which would include nectarines, peaches and flat peaches.
