Port of Corpus Christie bridge opening Oct 2011

The opening of the bridge

A bridge for commercial traffic was opened last week at the Port of Corpus Christi in Texas – the fifth largest port in the US in terms of total tonnage – providing a strategic advantage for the facility.

The 4,415ft direct connector bridge links Interstate 37 to the Joe Fulton International Trade Corridor, and was constructed by the Texas Department of Transportation as part of a US$32m project to improve mobility and safety, according to a press release from the port.

The bridge is projected to carry approximately 500 large trucks per day to the Port of Corpus Christi between southbound Interstate 37 and the Joe Fulton International Trade Corridor.

“Today a new doorway to international trade opportunities is opened signalling that the Coastal Bend is open for business,” said Texas Department of Transportation Corpus Christi district engineer John A. Casey.

Strategically located on the western Gulf of Mexico, with a straight, 45ft deep channel, the Port of Corpus Christie provides quick access to the Gulf and the entire US inland waterway system.

The port delivers access to overland transportation with on-site and direct connections to three Class-1 railroads and interstate and state highways.
