Switzerland-based logistics group Kuehne and Nagel (K&N) has opened one of its largest logistics centres in Obergeorgswerder, to the south of Hamburg in Germany.
The new complex comprises five warehouses and two office facilities across 120,000m2 of land, with the entire project costing the group €55m.
Boasting state-of-the-art technology, the facility features 166 loading bays, a vehicle yard and closed-circuit television, all geared to ensure fast and secure freight handling, the group said.
In addition, the plot includes a number of environmentally conscious features, including extensive green spaces and plants, lighting and heating systems and the use of regenerative energies, as well as a photovoltaic array across a roof space of 4,500m2.
'After our new German head office in HafenCity and our logistics terminal in Altenwerder, the completion of this large-scale facility in Obergeorgswerder marks the third major investment in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg within six years,' said group chairman Klaus-Michael Kuehne, speaking at the launch of the facility. 'This underlines the outstanding importance of Hamburg as a logistics location for the globally operating Kuehne and Nagel Group.
'I am convinced that this new hub will considerably enlarge our service offering and at the same time will strengthen Hamburg's position as an important logistics metropolis,' he added.
