France's largest farming union, the FNSEA (National Federation of Agricultural Holders' Unions), yesterday announced that Xavier Beulin would succeed Jean-Michel Lemétayer as its president following the latter's decision to step down before his term ends in March.
Mr Beulin, a cereal farmer and president of Sofiprotéol, the financial organisation of the French vegetable oils and proteins sector, was elected over grower Dominique Barrau, who will remain secretary general.
This is the first time that a representative of the arable crop sector has become president of the FNSEA.
Mr Beulin said that he would prioritise the economic side, with a particular focus on competitiveness, investment and farm modernisation.
