Dutch organic specialist Eosta has introduced a brand new carton for its Nature & More chicory in order to boost the organic product's shelf life.
According to product manager Rein Burger, the carton meets the vegetable's need for total darkness.
'Chicory is a very unique product because it is grown in complete darkness,' he said. 'If exposed to light it starts to turn green and loses its special taste. Since this greening process continues after the chicory has been harvested we have developed a special carton with an open-close lid and a short explanation about why this delicious product prefers the dark.'
Burger expressed his excitement about the carton's advantages and the potential for reducing waste.
'The lid will ensure the chicory stays white and yellow, and that in turn will mean less product is thrown away,' he said.
